Art for animal’s sake

Jamshedpur, March 14 (Source: The Telegraph): Tata Steel Zoological Park is getting ready to appeal to the visitors’ aesthetic sense.

The authorities have decided to lend an artistic look to the zoo with special focus on the people’s love for the animals. In the first phase, they will begin with beautification and renovation of the drinking water points.

As such, the water kiosks and the taps will be re-modelled after animals.

A freelance city-based sculptor, Shubhendu Biswas, is busy giving shape to the first drinking water point near the information centre at the zoo.

“The objective is to promote art as well as the visitors’ love for animals. The drinking water spots will be completely renovated. The taps will be shaped into faces of elephants and lions so that it looks that the water is gushing out from the animal’s mouth. However, we also require sponsorship to carry forward the project though we have taken the first step,” said Biswas.

The initial renovation costs have worked out to around Rs 20,000.

The zoo authorities are looking for sponsorships.

Biswas is also working on two artificial deer made of scrap metal sheets. Once completed, there are plans to place the models near the office of Tata Steel Zoological Park.

“I am using scrap metal to craft out the deer. The art lies in cutting the scrap metals and then moulding them in a shape. The importance of metals in an art work is to play with their rigidity yet applying the softer look of an animal’s body,” Biswas added.

The zoo authorities have other beautification plans as well, but want to take them up in phases.

Bipul Chakravarty, the director of Tata Steel Zoological Park, said the creative approach was one of the important aspects of the project. “The idea is to provide a natural artistic look to the zoo. We have a number of plans, but our budget will not allow us to take up everything together. Therefore, we are looking for sponsorships,” Chakravarty added.
