5-yr-old tormented, killed

Jamshedpur, Feb. 7 (Source - The Telegraph): A crime-scarred city had barely tended to its wounds when the news of an alleged rape and murder of a five-year-old girl made another nasty gash.

The victim, kidnapped and tormented last afternoon, died in hospital today, prompting angry residents of Railway Traffic Colony Kitadih to put up a two-hour blockade on the busy Parsudih-Station Road this afternoon, demanding instant justice.

The accused, Sanjay Paswan (19), arrested this morning based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s father, has been shifted to Ghagidih divisional jail .

According to family members, the child went missing from near her Railway Traffic Colony home around 3.30pm yesterday. She was found naked and bruised beside a drain three hours later.

Uncle Dharmender Rajwar said some people saw Sanjay offering to treat her to chocolates if she accompanied him. “He attempted rape and later killed her,” he said.

Sources said the child was found with a deep cut on her head, back and other body parts. She was first rushed to MGM Medical College and Hospital, but later referred to Tata Main Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early today.

Her father lodged an FIR with the Bagbera police, accusing Sanjay, a neighbour, of rape and murder. Officer in charge Sanjeev Kumar said they had arrested the youth and were interrogating him.

Angry relatives, however, demanded that the culprit be subjected to people’s justice. Sensing trouble, the police shifted Sanjay to jail in the afternoon.

“We have registered a case of rape and murder against Sanjay Paswan following an FIR lodged by the girl’s father. The rest of the story will be clear once the post-mortem report arrives,” Kumar said.

The blockade, which started around 2.30pm, was lifted at 4.30pm after sub-divisional officer, Dhalbhum, Kartik Kumar Prabhat reached the spot and assured the protesters that strict punishment would be awarded to Sanjay if proven guilty in the court of law.
