Training camp demolished

Jamshedpur, Feb. 6 (Source - The Telegraph): A Maoist training camp was demolished this morning after a fierce encounter between the police and rebels at Nawagaon in West Singhbhum.

Though there were no casualties on either side, police fired 12 to 13 rounds at the campsite, located under Jeraikela police station near the Orissa border. The Maoists triggered three landmine blasts, leading the police and paramilitary forces to open fire in the forest area.

Sources said the district police force was on a joint combing operation with paramilitary jawans after coming to know about the training camp. A fierce encounter took place soon after the camp was raided. The camp was demolished following the encounter, said Manoj Kumar Mishra, DIG (Kolhan).

He added that a solar panel and a large number of firearms were recovered from the camp.

According to him, the training was an old one and had the capacity to accommodate about 300 people. Combing operations were still on.

Police are on high alert in the district ahead of the 72-hour proposed Jharkhand bandh called by the ultra outfit from tomorrow midnight. The Maoists have called the bandh in protest against the proposed Operation Green Hunt.

Combing operations have already been intensified in West Singhbhum and neighbouring Seraikela-Kharsawan.
